The 2009 edition of e-Stars Seoul is set to start Friday this week. HLTV.org sat down with mTw's Jonas "whimp" Svendsen to seek his thoughts regarding the event and more.
The Danish team will once again be competing amongst the world elite, after a longer period with no events. This time around it will be representing Team West in the Continental Cup at e-Stars Seoul 2009. The team will also be looking at competing against fnatic, SK Gaming, WeMade FOX, k23 and TyLoo in the King of The Game format.
You started out 2009 as you finished 2008, but lately it seems fnatic has taken back the throne in Europe, how do you plan to get back on top?
fnatic is definitely the throne holders at the moment and I think we will have to use some time to get the throne back since I believe that we have to get back into the individual shape that we had in the beginning of this year and maybe start from scratch tactical-wise. I think that a lot of teams know how we play and therefore we are quite predictable and being unpredictable was one of our forces back in our prime. We don’t yet have an exact plan on how we are going to do so, however, we will strive to win some titles this year – that I promise.
Last time you were in Korea you got knocked out by fnatic in the 1st round of the playoffs, will you get your revenge at e-Stars or will it take more time?
I hope that we can get our revenge but if fnatic has been playing as much as they did before the summer I think we will have to play a perfect match to win.
The three Asian teams are k23, WeMade FOX and Tyloo, how well do you know these teams, and have you been doing anything special to prepare to play against them?
I only know some about k23 and WeMade, and they are both good teams, however, we haven't done anything in particular to prepare our self against them. I guess that we will watch some demos when we arrive at the hotel but we do always do that when we are facing good opponents.
This year's e-Stars will feature what just about everyone will agree are the three best European teams, do you expect the Asian teams to be able to cause any upsets?
Europe are strongly represented this year and I think it is fair to say that we should win the Continental-Cup overall, however, we might lose a map since cbble and aztec is to be played.
You obviously know the two other European teams inside out, but are you doing anything special to prepare to play against them?
We haven’t done anything special but I think that we will watch some demos when we arrive at the hotel. We know how fnatic and SK play and they know how we play so I guess we might do some minor anti-strats but nothing major.
You have been playing a couple of tournaments with mix teams, for how long have you been able to practice with your full lineup before e-Stars?
We have been able to play for one and a half week, however, since we have been playing different tournaments we are all not totally out of shape so we are going to Korea to win some.
This year's e-Stars event will feature the threesome and deathmatch like last year, but also a King of The Game with a format like other events, who do you think we will see in top3 of this?
I think it will be a fight between SK, fnatic, WeMade and us, where I favor the Europeans.
fnatic, a team you seemed to have figured out in 2008 has been looking very strong the past six months, was it just the lineup change at fnatic that changed things, or did more factors come into play?
When you get some new blood into an experienced team you almost every time end up with some sweet potion for victory. I believe that GeT_RiGhT and Gux came with the needed motivation, new-thinking and skill that fnatic needed to redeem themselves.
You and your team got a few titles to defend this year (WEM & WCG). What is on the menu for mTw looking beyond e-Stars?
I guess you can say that every title is going to be on the menu because we haven’t really made any plans for this new year. I believe that we will try to win as many titles as we possibly can.
Stay tuned for another installment of our e-Stars Seoul 2009 pre-coverage. HLTV.org will be in Seoul to provide on-site coverage, bringing you all of the latest from the tournament and more.
